An image of a lake on a sunny day.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, The Nature Conservancy, and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin collaborated on a 3.5-year project called the “Middle Potomac River Watershed Assessment.” The project set out to quantify Potomac watershed environmentally sustainable flows–flows that sustain healthy river ecosystems and the goods and services that humans derive from them.

The goal of the assessment was to identify key ecological needs related to streamflow, and the impacts of current and future human activities and potential effects of climate change on the Potomac watershed’s hydrology. This information can be used to balance and mitigate water use conflicts and prevent ecological degradation. The project was completed in November 2012.
