Conservation Cafe: River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia

September 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join extraordinary local conservation photographer, author, and filmmaker Krista Schlyer for a slideshow presentation and book reading of her 2018 book River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia.

The Anacostia was once a pristine river ecosystem, alive with the voices and aspirations of an unimaginably rich community of plants and animals. Deforestation, agricultural and urban runoff, and industry caused the Anacostia to diminish until it became one of the nation’s most denuded river ecosystems. If the Anacostia story had ended there, it would have forever remained a story of tragedy. But communities–wild and human-kind–have been working for decades to transform this river story from tragedy to triumph.

Since 2010, photographer and writer Krista Schlyer has been documenting the Anacostia transformation. During her presentation, Schlyer will share her experiences with the beleaguered but resilient Anacostia watershed and its wildlife, as well as stories of the champions and challenges that will ultimately decide its fate. The talk will include photos and reflections on the river, a brief introduction to Schlyer’s new multimedia story map River of Resilience, and readings from her new book, River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia.

About Krista: Krista Schlyer is a conservation photographer and writer living in the Washington DC area. Her focus is long-term conservation documentary projects with subjects ranging from the US-Mexico borderlands to the Anacostia River watershed. She is the author of three books including Continental Divide: Wildlife, People and the Border Wall, winner of the National Outdoor Book Award and the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography. Schlyer’s book, Almost Anywhere, chronicles a road trip to America’s national parks and wilderness areas, and her new book, River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia, was published in October 2018.
