District of Columbia Source Water Assessment

Great Falls, just upstream of the District's water intake at Little Falls.

The District of Columbia draws its drinking water from the Potomac River. It faces a unique situation in that its water supply and drinking water intakes are entirely outside of the city's borders. As a result, it must work with several upstream states, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, when addressing water supply issues.

Because of the inter-jurisdictional issues involved, the District of Columbia looked to the ICPRB to carry out its source water assessment. The assessment was completed in April of 2002.

The results of the assessment are available to the public in the form of an easy to understand report. If you have any questions, please contact Dale Long (long.dale@epa.gov).
