Point Lookout State Park

English settlers first landed on St. Clement's Island in the Ark and the Dove. They took possession of their new colony and held the first Roman Catholic Mass in the original colonies when they came ashore on the island on March 25th, 1634. A large cross commemorates the settlers' first landing.

Although once over 400 square acres in size, the "birthplace of Maryland" is now a 40-acre island only accessible by boat. The island is open for hiking, fishing and hunting. The island is also the site of the annual blessing of the fleet every October.

The St. Clement's Island—Potomac River Museum is located on Colton Point opposite the island and presents the story of the first settlers through first-person accounts including those of Leonard Calvert and Kittamaguund, a Piscataway indian. The museum also contains replicas of the Ark and the Dove.
