Potomac State Forest lies between the towns of Oakland and Westernport, partially bordering the Potomac River. The terrain is mountainous with few roads cutting through the park.

The State Forest is made up of 11,400 acres of forests, streams, and valleys and features the highest point in any Maryland State Forest—Backbone Mountain, elevation 3,220 feet. The area is an important part of the North Branch watershed with several streams running into the Potomac. For anglers, these streams and the river itself offer increasingly good trout fishing.

Potomac State Forest offers several trails, including the 10.5 miles of the Potomac Trail System. For overnight stays there are a variety of campsites including group sites for 8-25 people, shelter sites with 3-sided wooden shelters and primitive camping sites.

Detailed information is available from the park office at 301-334-2038 or at the Potomac State Forest web site.
