Land Trusts and Greenways

The Appalachian Trail Conference Land Trust has helped federal agencies acquire land for the 1,000-foot wide Trail "corridor" called for by the National Trails System Act of 1968 since 1982,. Now that this corridor is largely completed, the Land Trust works to further protect the Trail experience by protecting features of the surrounding environment.

The Civil War Preservation Trust aids in the preservation of America's significant Civil War battlefields by protecting the land and educating the public about the vital roles those battlefields played in directing the course of our nation's history.

The Conservation Fund helps local, state and federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations acquire property from willing sellers to protect open space, wildlife habitat, public recreation areas, river corridors and historic places.

The Land Trust Alliance provides an array of programs, including direct grants to land trusts, training programs, answers to more than 3,000 inquiries for technical assistance each year, and one-on-one mentoring to help land trusts build organizations that are equipped to protect open space.

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Greenways are protected corridors of open space that allow for a multifaceted approach to land conservation and park planning. Programs include Millennium Trails and Trail Planning Technical Assistance.

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Environmental Trust aims to preserve of open land, such as farmland, forest land, and significant natural resources. Programs include conservation easement, the Local Land Trust Assistance Program and the Keep Maryland Beautiful Program.

The American Farmland Trust is the only nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting agricultural resources. Founded by a group of concerned farmers in 1980, AFT's mission is to stop the loss of productive farmland and to promote farming practices that lead to a healthy environment.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust provides financial support for Marylanders to promote public awareness and participation in the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

The Land Trust of the Eastern Panhandle helps preserve open space and farms in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

The Land Trust of Virginia provides local communities with a tool to promote land conservation for the benefit of the general public and to foster the preservation, protection, and balanced use of each community's unique natural and historic resources.

The Nature Conservancy's mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. Regional offices are in Maryland and Virginia.

The Potomac Conservancy is a regional land trust dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of the natural, scenic, recreational, and historic qualities of the Potomac River and its surrounding watershed lands. The Potomac Conservancy conducts a comprehensive land protection program; develops and implements a variety of land restoration projects; provides counseling and other conservation support services for more than 70 other land trusts across four states and the District of Columbia; and partners with other land trusts, conservation organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies to more efficiently and expeditiously achieve land protection and restoration goals.

The Potomac River Greenways Coalition is working to promote the public and private stewardship of a regional network of greenways -- protected corridors of natural, historic,
scenic, and recreational resources -- along the Potomac River and its tributaries.

The Trust for Public Lands works work with landowners, government agencies, and community groups to: create urban parks, gardens, greenways, and riverways, build livable communities by setting aside open space in the path of growth, conserve land for watershed protection, scenic beauty, and close-to-home recreation, and safeguard the character of communities by preserving historic landmarks and landscapes.

Valley Conservation Council promotes land use that sustains the farms, forests, open spaces, and cultural heritage of the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia.

West Virginia Land Trust protects land with natural, scenic, recreational, historic or productive value - permanently. It accepts land donations, purchases land, or obtains conservation easements.

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy works together to save the place we care about, protect natural lands, promote healthy and attractive communities, and preserve Fallingwater. In the Potomac Basin, WPC has initiated its Sustainable Countrysides program in the Sideling Hill Creek watershed. The goal of the program is to implement sustainable solutions to the problems and challenges facing the human and natural communities.

The Wildlife Land Trust works with landowners worldwide to protect wild animals by permanently protecting their natural habitats. Lands protected by the Trust provide wild animals with a safe and nurturing environment, free from harmful human interference.
