Students working to create a rain garden
|
The Potomac River watershed is home to almost five million people
and the health of the watershed is dependent on the actions of its
citizens. There are many ways to get involved in efforts to preserve
and protect the watershed. Clean-ups, tree plantings, workshops,
and other activities are sponsored by various organizations throughout
the year. By joining watershed organizations
and community groups, citizens join together to focus their
efforts at the local level where important gains can be made. The ICPRB has initiated several programs to involve the public including rain barrels and Potomac River Rambles.
The ICPRB will continue its rain barrel program in 2008. We will have the online workshop registration and barrel reservation posted in late January. To reserve a barrel, purchasers will be required to attend a workshop, which will provide information about barrel installation and maintenance and landscaping ideas that complement the barrel. There are is a limited supply of barrels so reserve yours as soon as possible! For more information, contact Jennifer Willoughby.
As population of the Washington area continues to grow, ICPRB faces
the challenge of educating and assisting an increasing number of
constitutes. Many citizens do not know their watershed address,
how their actions can impact the health of the watershed or what
resources are available to help them become better stewards of the
watershed. Additionally, watershed organizations and community groups
often have great ideas but lack strong partners, sufficient volunteers,
adequate expertise, and funding sources to move their ideas into
actions. One tool ICPRB has developed is a toolkit of restoration activities with detailed how-to instructions. It is designed to be a one-stop shop for restoration activities. If you have suggestions for new activities to add, contact the watershed coordinator at info@icprb.org.
ICPRB is working to create a clearinghouse of information for individuals
and groups who want to get involved in the Potomac River watershed.
Our calendar of events provides information
on upcoming activities in the watershed. You can get contact information
on watershed groups working in your area by using our
interactive watershed map. You can find out what
you can do as an individual to protect the health of the Potomac
watershed through your daily life decisions. Furthermore, you can
access information through our web resources
page which provides website addresses for various environmental
and recreational topics as well as key federal and state government
agencies.
