Forests and Forest Buffers

The Chesapeake Bay Program's Forest Buffer webpage gives a good overall synopis of the the importance of forest buffers as well as information for those who are interest in creating forest buffers.

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Forest Service conserves and enhances the quality, quantity, productivity and biological diversity of the forest and tree resources. It provides leadership and technical and financial support to inform, involve and empower citizens, local governments and private organizations to take action necessary to accomplish these goals.

Maryland's Stream ReLeaf Program offers information as well as an implementation plan for Maryland's effort to create 600 new miles of riparian forest buffer by 2010.

The Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry manages over two million acres of State Forest land and provides technical assistance to other forest landowners. Programs include Stream ReLeaf, Conservation Education, Environmental Certification, and State Forest Management Plans.

The Virginia Department of Forestry protects and develops healthy, sustainable forest resources. Programs include riparian buffers to protect water quality, promotion of conservation incentive and best management practices, and watershed management.

The Virginia Department of Forestry Riparian Forest Buffer page offers information on their efforts to protect and restore forest buffers, as well as case studies and information on tax incentives.

The West Virginia Division of Forestry protects and manages the forest resources of West Virginia.

The Allegheny Society of Foresters is a group of 1,100 professional foresters in the five states of DE, MD, NJ, PA and WV. The objective of the Society is to advance the science, technology, and practice of professional forestry in America, and to use the knowledge and skills of the profession to benefit the society. SAF members advocate and practice land management consistent with ecologically sound principles.

The Maryland Forest Association works to promote the maintenance of a healthy and productive forests land base so as to enhance the economic, environmental, and social well-being of all who live in Maryland.

The Maryland Cooperative Extension Riparian Buffer Systems offers an online manual for those interested in creating and maintaining forest buffers as well as information on regional plant and seed suppliers.
