What: ICPRB Quarterly Business Meeting and Open House

The ICPRB will host an open house on December 6 and quarterly meeting on December 7 for its commissioners and the public at its offices in Rockville, Md. The open house will feature interactive displays highlighting ICPRB’s work throughout the Potomac basin. The quarterly business meeting will focus on ICPRB’s goals for the year, upcoming projects, and progress reports. What: Ponderings-Evergreen Scene
When: December 10, 4-5 p.m.
Where: Hidden Pond Nature Center, Fairfax County, Va.

The forest at Hidden Pond Park is not all bare-from pine trees to mosses, we will search for them and identify what they are. Dress warmly and prepare for mud. Canceled in case of snow. What: Try-It Toally: Plants

What: Walk with a Naturalist

Where: Hidden Pond Nature Center, Fairfax County, Va.

Naturalist Casey Pittrizi will take folks on a leisurely hike through the Pohick Stream Valley forest, where deer, fox, and the elusive bround creeper might be seen. Program is canceled in case of rain. Free. For more information or to register, call 703.451.9588.

What: Nature Quest-Evergreens
When: December 13, 10-11:30 a.m..
Where: Hidden Pond Nature Center, Fairfax County, Va.

Why do some plants and trees stay green all winter, while others lose their leaves? Do evergreen plants help animals in winter? These questions will be answered, along with more evergreen facts revealed during the program, which includes a walk and craft. What: Meteor Shower and Sky Watching
When: December 13, 5-6 p.m..
Where: Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, Fairfax County, Va.

Scheduled to coincide with the peak of the Geminid meteor shower, this program will teach you some basic information about the night sky, its planets, constellations, and the moon. Dress warmly and bring a lawn chair and flashlight so you can enjoy the beautiful dark sky view from the Quinn Farm grounds. Canceled in cases of rain or snow. What: POW! Power of Wetlands for Educators

If you would like to turn your schoolyard or community center into a living, breathing outdoor classroom—with students involved every step of the way— then join us for this exciting, hands-on workshop! Assist the naturalist with a salamader survey and discover salamanders that are active during the cold winter months. Catch, identify, and release salamanders while recording important information for a survey. Wear shoes that can get wet. Reservations are required and the fee is $5. What: Bicycle Posada

a coalition of individuals and groups led by the Rainier Riders, a bicycling club in nearby Mt. Rainier, Maryland, will gather to re-enact a "Bicycle Posada," based on the traditional Hispanic Christmas ritual of processing through a neighborhood
during the
Christmas season as a way to remember the journey to Bethlehem by Jesus'
parents, recounted in the New Testatment. The "Bicycle Posada" is a local, grassroots response to an increase in personal attacks along a segment of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia Trail, a well-used recreational venue that connects several communities in Prince George's County, including Hyattsville, Mt. Discover the variety of turtles found in Fairfax County. Meet a snapping turtle and an eastern box turtle up close. Learn their similarities and differences and find out how they are spending this holiday season. Reservations are requested. This free program is appropriate for families. What: Birdwatching with an Expert

Where: Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bladensburg, Md.

Join a park naturalist to locate and identify woodland and water birds along the Anacostia River. Binoculars provided. The program is open to all ages, but under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Fee is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents. For more information, call 301.779.0371.

What: Nature discovery for Children: Up in the Air

Where: Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bladensburg, Md.

What goes up and how does it stay there? Watch the birds and learn about air, wind, and the dynamics of flight. Conduct experiments and build flying toys and air-powered contraptions.
