In addition, some areas are offering incentives for installing rain gardens, rain barrels, and other environmentally-friendly practices. MARYLAND

If you live in Frederick County, Md., you are eligible for 25 free seedlings through the Maryland DNR's Backyard Buffer program! Seedlings can be planted on private property. Call in early spring to be put on the seedling list!

Tree-Mendous Maryland offers saplings at a reduced cost for planting projects in public areas, such as community parks, schools, churches, etc. These trees cannot be planted on private property.

Throughout Maryland, receive a $25 off when you purchase of one tree worth $50 or more from participating nurseries. Visit the Maryland DNR Marylanders Plant Trees website for complete details.

Montgomery County, through its RainScapes Program, is offering monetary incentives for installing rain gardens, cisterns, rain barrels, and other green practices. Following suit, the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg also have their own RainScapes programs for residents.

Audubon Society of Central Maryland holds a native plant sale in the spring each year.

Allegany County, Georges Creek Watershed Association, Maryland DNR, and Chesapeake Bay Program are partnering to bring the Backyard Buffer program to county residents in 2010. Residents who own 5 acres or less 100 feet or closer to a stream are eligible for the free trees. VIRGINIA

2010 Native Tree and Shrub Seedling Sale through the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District. Get 6 bare-root trees for $10.95 or 10 bare-root shrubs for $15.95. Payment and orders are due by April 12 and pickup is on April 16-17.

Virginia Department of Forestry sells seedlings each year from its nursery. Be sure to order early for the best selection!

ParkFairfax holds a native plant sale each year.

Virginia Native Plant Society has compiled a list of native plant nurseries throughout the state.

 

WASHINGTON, D.C.

The U.S. Arboretum offers a native plant sale and symposium each year in the spring.

 

PENNSYLVANIA

Audubon Society of Western PA holds a native plant sale in the spring of each year.
