Interstate Notification & Travel Time Estimates for Spills in the Potomac River Basin

The Potomac River basin covers parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, and includes our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. A spill of hazardous material at a single location in the basin may reach drinking water intakes of communities in two, three, or four different states. State agencies should contact ICPRB when a spill occurs which may have an impact on drinking water sources, and should also contact agencies in downstream states. ICPRB will run its suite of contaminant transport models to estimate travel times to downstream intakes, and will provide this information to downstream water utilities. ICPRB can also assist in notifying water supply agencies in other states, and other regional and federal agencies.

ICPRB computes time-of-travel estimates: When a significant spill occurs in the Potomac River or one of its tributaries, please notify the ICPRB at 301-274-8133. ICPRB will run its spill models to estimate the times at which drinking water supply intakes may be affected, and will inform downstream water utilities. Please also make sure that water supply agencies in other potentially affected states are contacted. When calling ICPRB, please leave the following information:

1.  Name and telephone number of person reporting the spill
2.  Location of spill, including
- name of affected stream
- street address and/or latitude & longitude
3.  Identity of spill material
4.  Estimate of quantity of spill: total mass or volume or discharge rate
