IN THE WATER...
The Master Fish list includes all the known fish species in the Potomac watershed. This list is constantly updated and is always in draft form.
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) is an important part of the food web. Underwater plants help capture nutrients and provide vital habitat for young fish, crabs, and other aquatic critters. When water becomes too murky from too much sediment or algae, the SAVs cannot get enough light to survive. This in turn can cause problems in the ecosystem.
Invasive Species in the water can take habitat and food away from native animals and plants that need it. In some instances, invasive plants and animals have been naturalized and have been able to exist without causing problems in the ecosystem.
