Assessing your business' environmental impact

Historic Anacostia Drawing
The Anacostia River as it once appeared.

The health of the Anacostia River has long been harmed by human activities. High levels of bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals found in the fish and sediments of the river along with floating trash are evidence of our impact on the river and have led to its listing as a "Region of Concern" by the Chesapeake Bay Program.

If your business is located within the Anacostia watershed (the land area that drains into the Anacostia River) the activities of your business directly impact the health of the river. If your business is located within the watershed, your business decisions can make a difference! Remember - every square foot of the Anacostia matters!

Please take the following steps and make your business a part of positive change:

Download and read our free guide - The Non-point Source Pollution Handbook for Businesses (5.5 mb pdf file) or request a copy by calling 301-984-1908x103 or email steward@icprb.org.
Complete the self-evaluation in the booklet (see pages 4-7).
Use the information and resources in the booklet to determine what your business can do.
Follow up by requesting that an ARBC representative do a confidential site visit and advise you of positive steps that you and your business can take.
Then apply to be recognized as an Anacostia Watershed Steward.

When you complete these actions we will recognize your business's accomplishments and help promote the good work that you are doing. Becoming a Steward will not only reduce pollution and instill employee pride, it will also provide positive publicity for your business!

To have an ARBC representative help you evaluate your business's pollution prevention activities, or provide more information about the ARBC, please contact:
